Between breath and water, we discover how alive we really are.
Surface was inspired by a free dive I made in Fiji many years ago. Using a reference photograph of my descent, I reimagined the moment not of going down, but of returning to the surface just before breaking the water to breath again.
The piece was rendered entirely in colored pencil on a heated Icarus board, allowing for layered transparency and the controlled blending needed to capture bubbles, refraction, and the distortion of the water around the figure. The technical challenge mirrored the subject itself: holding tension, patience, and focus.
This work became part of my ongoing exploration of women's figures in water, marking a passage between stillness and air, between introspection and emergence.
Surface was recognized as a Finalist in the Exhibizone's Stillness exhibition in 2026.
