TEAR IN THE SKY
Water Series / Original Artwork
The sky isn't tearing, it's revealing what was always beyond it.
Inspired by a drive up the Pacific Coast Highway to Bodega Bay, Tear in the Sky began with an overwhelming awareness of atmosphere. Riding in a convertible the horizon seemed to dissolve. There was more sky than land, and the clouds felt almost like a physical surface rather than distance.
When we arrived, the idea emerged: what if the sky could be opened?
The painting imagines the sky as a fragile membrane torn back to reveal a hidden coastline beneath. Water and land exist behind what we normally perceive as reality, suggesting that place is not only geographic but also emotional and remembered.
Created with collage, acrylic, and airbrush, the soft airbrushed atmosphere contrasts with the tactile torn edges, reinforcing the tension between illusion and surface. Part of my Water Series, the work explores water as a threshold, a space between the outer world and inner experience.
