Some places live longer in memory than they ever did in time.
Once standing along a remote highway in Desert Center, California, the Desert Center Cafe was a small roadside stop built in the 1920s and later abandoned before eventually disappearing altogether. I visited the site years ago, and the quiet stillness of the desert and the empty building stayed with me.
The desert has long been a part of my life, we had a home there in La Quinta for many years and this piece is my way of preserving a place that now exists only in memory. Rather than depicting ruin, I chose to paint a moment suspended in time: bright sky, long shadows, and the absence of people, yet clear evidence that many passed through.
This work is a tribute to the vanishing roadside landmarks of the American desert and to the powerful sense of stillness the desert holds.
