Have you ever returned to a place you loved, only to relize it had changed...and so had you?
This drawing was inspired by an old dory tied quietly to a dock in Montauk, New York, a place that shaped so many of my childhood memories. I grew up spending summers there, long before Montauk became the destination it is today. Back then, it was a working fishing village where life moved at a slower pace and the docks felt like they belonged to everyone.
When I return now, the boats are familiar, but the place feels different. Time has transformed it, just as it has transformed me.
The weathered dory became more than a subject to draw. It became a symbol of the places we carry with us long after life has taken us somewhere else. Resting in quiet water and reflected in shifting light, it speaks to the bittersweet experience of remembering a place that still exists, but never quite in the same way.
Rendered entirely in colored pencil using a hot Icarus Board, The Dock relies on layered color and reflected light to create depth, atmosphere, and stillness. The shimmering water contrasts with the quiet permanence of the boat, capturing that balance of holding on and letting go.
