Lady Day is a colored pencil rendering of a gardenia, created as a quiet tribute to Billie Holiday, whose voice shaped the soundtrack of my early years. Growing up surrounded by jazz, her music carried a depth of emotion that has stayed with me over time.
The gardenia-so often associated with her iconic presence, becomes both subject and symbol here. Through the ;layer precision of colored pencil, I sought to capture not only its softness and luminosity, but also the feeling her music evokes: intimate, soulful, and enduring.
Part of my Botanical Series , Lady Day reflects a personal intersection of memory, music, and observation.
