TRYING TO FILL DAVID'S SHOES
Reclaimed Series / Original Artwork
I could never replace him-only remember where he stood.
This piece was created in memory of my lifelong best friend, David Friedman, an abstract expressionist artist. Our families were close before we were even born, and we remained friends throughout our lives.
David always wore his Converse sneakers. Instead of painting his likeness, I chose to draw his shoes, worn, familiar, and unmistakably his. The background is based on one of David's own abstract paintings, allowing his artistic voice to remain present within the work.
This colored pencil painting is not a portrait in the traditional sense, but a remembrance. The shoes stand in for the person, and the color behind them for the energy he brought to the world.
